Isuzu D-Max Towing Specifications Australia

The Isuzu D-Max is a popular Australian tow vehicle, offering up to 3,500 kg braked towing capacity on selected 4×4 variants. Known for its proven 3.0L turbo-diesel engine and robust drivetrain, the D-Max is a common choice for caravan owners — but tow ratings vary by grade, cab style and model year.

D-Max generations and tow ratings

• Previous generation (2016–2020): Selected 4×4 variants offer up to 3,500 kg braked towing with the 3.0L 4JJ1-TCX engine.
• Current generation (2021–current): LS-M, X-Terrain and X-Runner variants with updated styling, safety and unchanged 3,500 kg tow rating on 4×4 grades.

Key D-Max towing figures to verify

When assessing a D-Max for towing, check the following from the verified specification table below:

• • Braked tow capacity — 3,000 or 3,500 kg depending on variant and drivetrain
• • GVM — typically around 2,950 kg
• • GCM — typically around 6,000 kg
• • Towball download limit — typically 350 kg
• • Payload — varies by grade; accessories reduce available headroom

D-Max payload and accessory considerations

The D-Max has a moderate payload that can be quickly consumed by a bullbar, canopy, drawer system and passengers. When towing near maximum capacity, verify that the rear axle load rating accommodates the towball download plus any cargo in the tray. The D-Max’s GCM limit means that at maximum tow capacity, the vehicle’s GVM must be managed carefully.
