Post-Registration GVM Upgrades in WA and Australia
Already registered your 4WD and found it is over GVM? Understand approval, inspection and documentation requirements, what an upgrade can change, and what it cannot change.
Many 4WD owners discover they're over GVM only after fitting accessories and having the vehicle weighed. Post-registration GVM upgrades may be available for selected vehicles through suitably approved specialist providers. Eligibility, components, certification and legal recognition depend on the exact vehicle, approved kit and the state or territory where the vehicle is registered. A GVM upgrade does not automatically increase GCM or braked towing capacity.
GVM upgrades in Western Australia
Transport WA advises that an increase to a vehicle's GVM requires an inspection. For an in-service vehicle, the modification must be approved and a modification permit issued. Where the vehicle has been modified to support the increase, a weighbridge certificate may also be required so the new tare weight can be recorded. A GVM increase does not automatically increase GCM or the manufacturer's braked towing capacity. Review the current Transport WA GVM and GCM guidance before committing to a kit or installer.
What a post-registration upgrade changes
- Where the exact vehicle, kit and registration jurisdiction support it, the vehicle's legal GVM rating may be revised only through the required approval and certification process.
- Suspension components to support the higher mass rating.
What it does not change
- A GVM upgrade does not automatically increase GCM or braked towing capacity.
- Axle load limits are set by the axle manufacturer, not the suspension kit.
- Towball download limit remains as specified by the towbar and vehicle manufacturer.
- Insurance and registration may require notification — check with your insurer and state road authority.
What to verify after an upgrade
- Confirm the required approval, certification and labelling/documentation for your registration jurisdiction.
- A weighbridge reading confirms the vehicle is now within the new GVM.
- Your insurer has been notified and the upgrade is noted on the policy.
- The rear axle load is still within its limit when fully loaded.
Important: Post-registration GVM upgrades may be available for selected vehicles through suitably approved specialist providers. Eligibility, components, certification and legal recognition depend on the exact vehicle, approved kit and the state or territory where the vehicle is registered. A GVM upgrade does not automatically increase GCM or braked towing capacity. Confirm the current requirements with the relevant transport authority, your insurer and the provider, and retain the modification approval documentation.
